They also have a much older population than the U.S. Zeroing out their interest rates also minimizes income to savers, such as the pensioners. Now, that they've announced the end of the government stimulus program, it can be expected that people will batten their hatches and cut back on consumption for the tough times expected next year. Most of the stimulus for this year has already impacted the economy in the spring.
