See the italicized paragraph in Reply #346 They distinguish between spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric polarization as two mechanisms that must both be addressed. The former is eliminated due to non-polarizability of the crystal in the [1100] direction, and they claim that the latter is eliminated in their structure because there's no shear stress in the growth plane.
