Hello Peter: The referenced article was in Scetion C "BUSINESS" front page of the June 22, 1996 San Jose Mercury News under the "TECH TICKER". The article contains one paragraph and is titled: "High Inventory, low sales plague chip makers". The full text is as follows:
"Several chip makers predicted lower-than-expected earning or revenues because of an inventory surplus, mainly in the telecommunications industry. San Jose based Cypress Semiconductor Corp. said it expects per-share earnings of $0.22 or more for the quarter, less than the $0.27 cents it earned in the year-earlier quarter. The company also said it expects revenue of about $150 million, compared with $134 million a year ago. Milpitas based California Micro Devices Inc., which makes chips for telecommunication equipment makers said its first fiscal quarter revenue will be less than the $11 million reported in the previous quarter because of weak sales of its electronic components. Cyrix Corp. of Richardson Texas, said it expects to report a seconf quarter loss of more than $15 million because of lower prices for computer chips and delays in unveiling its next-generation microprocessor."

My attention to this article was focused on the statement that "chip makers predicted lower-than-expected earning or revenues because of an inventory surplus, mainly in the telecommunications industry". The key word to me is TELECOMMUNICATION INDUSTRY. I thought this sector might not be as vulnerable as the PC sector to a temporary slow down but it appears that it may experience a three to six month slow down which began around January 1996.

Hope this helps.
