Feathering the nest with long-term plays
Ken Schapiro, manager of Condor Capital, uses a
top-down strategy that focuses on a combination of
growth and value. Here's why he's crowing about retail, as
well as timely tech picks.

By Eneida Guzman

Part of your approach is to identify trends in the
marketplace and pick companies that are likely to be
propelled by momentum of those themes. What
developments are you seeing at the moment?

One example is Microsoft (MSFT, news, msgs). A lot of
people haven't really been watching Windows. They've
been looking at Microsoft, but they haven't really been
looking at it for the right reasons. (Editor's note: Microsoft
owns and publishes MSN MoneyCentral.) They've been
looking at the litigation instead of the products.

It's not that we're buying Microsoft. But Windows 2000 is
going onto corporate desktops in significant numbers
starting in the fourth quarter and will raise a lot of
momentum in the first quarter of 2001.

And that particular rollout on the desktop is going to cause
an upgrade cycle in several different areas. One is on the
desktop. The machines that use processors are going to be
hitting Intel's (INTC, news, msgs) sweet spot when they
come out with the Pentium IV. So you're going to see a lot
in the way of upgrades on the desktop to take advantage of
that particular product.

The new Itanium processor that Intel has is addressing that
particular need. The whole server environment is supposed
to grow fivefold within the next five years. So we see a
tremendous opportunity for Intel getting into the 64-bit
microprocessor market. So we very much like Intel, and
this should play out very significantly starting especially
next year.
