U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff ordered the San Diego company to pay as much as $250 million to Universal Music Group for intentionally violating its copyrights. Universal, the world's largest record company, had urged a penalty of $450 million in a case closely watched by Napster and other businesses that share music or other copyrighted material over the Internet. -------- In case it still hasn't sunk in -- this means that music players that allow downloading of ONLY "watermarked" (meaning loosely, that only one approved copy can be made) music will be required in order to access music on the web. This is where EDIG comes to the fore.
