------------------------------------- CALL FOR REGISTRATION THE 2nd WORKSHOP ON UPGRADING AND REFINING OF HEAVY OIL, BITUMEN, AND SYNTHETIC CRUDE OIL
A 2-day workshop sponsored and organized by National Centre for Upgrading Technology (NCUT) Delta Edmonton South Hotel & Conference Centre Edmonton, September 17-19, 2000
Background In 1997, NCUT sponsored the first workshop on ''Directions in Upgrading and Marketing of Heavy Oil and Synthetic Crude Oil.'' At that time, the industry was rife with announcements of plans for new oil sands plants and expansions of existing operations, and that industry action has expanded since. As many of those plans start to come to fruition over the next decade, there will be a surge in synthetic crude oil (SCO) production and, when the price is right, expanded heavy oil and bitumen production. Much of the increase in SCO production has been the result of revampings and the debottlenecking of production facilities: the vacuum tower has changed the way companies process and market bitumen; partial deasphalting of bitumen coupled with hydroconversion is about to be commercialized, and trials are underway to produce a partially upgraded heavy oil by in-situ processes. These changes have resulted in and will further result in an expansion of the ways the oil industry markets, transports, and refines heavy oil and bitumen-derived products.
Objectives The workshop will provide a forum to bring people up to date on the changes that have taken place and the future plans for production, upgrading, and refining. The participants will help frame the issues surrounding upgrading, transportation, marketing, and quality.
Participation Participation is limited by format and objectives to around 100 people, but there will be broad industry representation.
Format There will be four technical sessions and one summary session. The technical sessions are comprised of presentations from industry leaders and a question and answer/discussion period at the end of each session. The discussion sessions will first include an opportunity for added information from industry participants who did not present papers. Areas covered by papers are as follows: Partial Upgrading to Pipelineable Products Primary Upgrading – Present and Future Heavy and Synthetic Crudes in the Refinery Market, Transportation, and Quality Issues The summary session is a facilitated open session with a panel consisting of the chairs from the technical sessions. The panel members will summarize the key findings from their sessions and lead the open discussion as participants consider where we go from here.
