Gerald. I was debating about mentioning margin when I talked about short selling. I decided against it but forgot about you. You keep pretty good track of my postings. gg.

I just don't look at margin as being the same thing as short selling. After all, it is a buy and I am not selling something I don't own. I never looked into shorting stock with margin and don't even know if this exists. In other words: When I buy a stock on margin, I buy the stock right now. I am not borrowing it. That baby is mine. Only my broker makes a little money lending me the dough. I am not borrowing someone else's stock. I could go on but I am sure you see a little diff. by now.
As for shorting a stock. I would not even complain if someone would short a stock that they own. But it's borrowed stock that causes most of the volatility.

Mortgages. Again. I am buying a house or whatever. I am not borrowing it from somebody. Yes, I am borrowing the money for it but if I can't pay for it after a while, I only hurt myself. And the lender probably still made money on me in the meantime.

And like I said so many times before. I am not blaming anybody for short selling. As long as things like this exist, there is no reason why someone should not take advantage of it. All I am saying is: It contributes to most of the volatility in my mind.
They talked about margin calls etc. but have found out in the meantime that margin really has not been a culprit. You have to come up with 50% and forced margin selling has been minimal.

One more time. When you short a stock, most of the time you short someone else's stock. This stock is not being sold by an owner. It's sold by brokerages and why they can do this, is a mystery to me. Banks cannot sell houses to buyers when a homeowner is not selling his house.
When I buy a stock on margin, I buy the stock. I buy a stock some owner is selling to me. I don't buy a stock the owner is not selling. Blah, blah, blah etc.

Estate taxes. Yes, I know what you are talking about. But I was mostly talking about estate taxes for business people, small or large who probably have to sell in lots of cases, just to pay the taxes. I am not in that category. Yes, some of us peons are affected by estate taxes also. Somehow it does not seem right to tax the dead. Bad enough when they tax us to death when we are alive. gg.

Insurance. Hopefully you are using term insurance. You are better of investing the extra cost for whole life ins. into the market. JMO and what I have heard and researched.

That's too bad about your no sun experience in Seattle. I have to say that I am beginning to believe that all this rain in Seattle is a myth. gg. Seattle had a beautiful August my family here says. So far so good. A sprinkle here and there since we have been here. Over a week now.

The market is doing nicely at this time. Dow down only 6 and NAZ up over 80. Let's hope it holds.
