(1) There's no time limit of which I'm aware for shorts to cover, unless the short is called, which happens occassionally. (2) Depends on the system you use. Bloomberg's trading system is probably the best for independent brokers, but it costs $1200 month. Next in line is Bonneville. They are difficult to deal with but they charge around $420 month for real time. Hopefully real time data, tic by tic will eventually come down in price for nonprofessionals to trade. There are several methods of trading. Day trading can kill if you're not watching the system constantly. The second method of trading is easier - know your company thoroughly. Day traders are looking for dips and small pattern changes, not really long term holders. Most traders on the floor are day traders.
