Jordan in software deal with Microsoft AMMAN (Reuters) - Jordan signed an agreement with Microsoft Corp. in New York on Thursday which would cover all the software requirements of the Jordanian government, Microsoft said in a statement. The U.S. software company did not give details of the agreement but said the deal was a first step in King Abdullah's vision to transform Jordan into a technology research and development hub for the Middle East. It said the monarch, in New York for the United Nations Millennium Summit, attended the signing ceremony in the presence of Bob Vellone, Microsoft Vice President of the Eastern region of the U.S. ``This agreement with Microsoft is a step toward our vision to transform Jordan into a knowledge-based technology center to utilize our most precious resource, our youth,'' the statement quoted King Abdullah as saying. The king has held talks with top Microsoft executives including Bill Gates this year in his drive to modernize the kingdom. A government plan drawn up last year envisages the creation of 30,000 new jobs in the information technology field by 2004, raising exports, especially of computer software, to $550 million from 15 million last year and attracting $150 million in direct foreign investment. sjmercury.com
