Advanced Micro Devices files $1.5 bln shelf offering
WASHINGTON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Computer chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE:AMD - news) filed on Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission to periodically sell up to $1.5 billion in common and preferred stock, debt and warrants.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based firm is also carrying forward an additional $482.5 million in previously registered but unsold securities, making the total value of the offering $2 billion, it said in the shelf registration filing.

Under a shelf registration, a company may sell securities from time to time in one or more separate offerings in amounts, at prices and on terms to be determined at the time of sale.

AMD plans to use the net proceeds for general corporate purposes, which may include reducing outstanding debt, working capital, acquisitions and capital expenditures.

AMD shares rose 11/16 to close at $33 on the New York Stock Exchange. In a 52-week period they have traded as high as $48-1/2 and as low as $8-3/16.
