The stock market seems to agree with you about the first to market. YHOO certainly benefitted in part from being there first. But they also executed very well. Why go anywhere else when YHOO has so many people posting on the stock message boards? (actually, here we are at SI because yhoo is awash in idiots).

AMZN likewise got there first and benefitted. Why bother to go to BN.com if you already are signed up on AMZN and if AMZN has the most users contributing to the book reviews?

But seems to me that data storage is different. As the customer, why do I care if they have lots of other customers too? First movers get big market shares in certain kinds of markets, but not all. So far, I have not heard anyone who knows the data storage business point out why there is a natural first mover advantage. The ONLY thing I can see is that if you get out there first, you can sign up more customers with less competitive pressure, but that is not much of an edge.

Am I missing something?
