[Orckit / China]
Does anyone have any opinion on what impact this may have on Amati. Yes, of course this is for HDSL and the HKT deal is VDSL, but, Orckit also does VDSL, Idsl, ADSL, SDSL. Also, does anyone have any thoughts on the wording in the title "HDSL Tender for China".
Thanks.
Orckit Wins Country-Wide HDSL Tender for China
TEL AVIV, Israel, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Orckit Communications (Nasdaq:ORCTF), announced that the company has won an HDSL contract, based on a tender issued by the Ministry of Post and Telecom in the People's Republic of China. Orckit's HDSL equipment will initially be deployed in 21 Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, and other major cities, and eventually the network will expand to cover the entire Chinese nation.
``This is a very strategic project which establishes Orckit as a primary player in the Chinese telecommunications access market,'' remarked Joseph Shou of Macroview Telecom, Orckit's marketing partner in China.
Part of the China National Frame Relay Network Project, Orckit's HDSL will be used as the extension of the transmission system for the interconnection of Frame Relay switches between cities.
``This Project is the start of a major effort to cover all the cities in the People's Republic of China with advanced data service,'' said Shou. ``Orckit's HDSL is going to be a key element in the new network.''
``While the contract is expected to have only a small effect on Orckit's 1997 sales volume, this is still an important step forward for the Company in the Asian market, giving us a broad base from which to expand in China,'' said Orckit President Izhak Tamir.
HDSL, which stands for High bit rate Digital Subscriber Line, is a digital modem technology which enables symmetric transmission of 2 Mbps over regular, unconditioned copper telephone wire. This allows telecom operators to offer high speed data services to their customers without incurring a costly infrastructure investment.
Orckit's HDSL product line, which includes the ORcom Customer Premises Unit and the ORrack Central Office Sub-rack, features Orckit-developed core technology. Both the ORcom and the ORrack meet or exceed all requirements of the European (ETSI-TM3) standards. These systems support bi-directional 2.048 Mbps (E1) for distances of up to 5 Km., using standard, unconditioned, twisted copper pairs. Orckit's HDSL repeater (regenerator) enables HDSL transmission over longer loop-distances, and can double the reach of the system. The user interfaces provided by the system consists of 2.048 Mbps G.703/G.704 (E1), Fractional E1, point to multi-point and Nx64 Kbps DCE interface. The system supports Remote Power Feeding via the copper pairs.
Orckit Communications develops, manufactures and markets a wide range of high-speed local loop communications systems that take advantage of state-of- the-art digital signal processing and VLSI technologies, including HDSL (High bit rate Digital Subscriber Line), ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) and VDSL (Very high bit rate Digital Subscriber Line). Orckit has a global customer base for its Digital Subscriber Line products in over thirty countries. Orckit is an active participant in many standards bodies concerning ADSL. Orckit is a strategic partner of Fujitsu Network Communications in North America.
