Philips to use Microsoft software in set-top boxes
NEW YORK, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG - news) said on Friday it would license Microsoft Corp.'s (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) Enhanced TV software for use in its set-top boxes and collaborate with the software giant on developing new products with Microsoft software.

The combined Philips and Microsoft products are expected to enable features that combine properties of the Internet with traditional television as well as digital recording similar to TiVo Inc. (NasdaqNM:TIVO - news) and privately-held Replay.

The first Philips set-top boxes running Microsoft TV software is expected to be available in 2001.

Philips also announced it was extending its agreement with interactive television software maker Liberate Technologies (NasdaqNM:LBRT - news) to develop new digital set-top box technologies and products. The two companies are also partners in America Online Inc.'s (NYSE:AOL - news) AOLTV project.
