just how 'shrewd' do you think handspring management is? what is their position in the parts food chain when it comes down to 'past alliances'

From what I can see it's in PALM's interest for HAND to do well. I'm quite sure if there is a food chain issue PALM can help HAND with, they'd do it. Same holds true for the other licensees SONY and Kyocera (via QCOM).
