I don't think they should even be called lcd - they are just digital display of some sort.

While my SO's cell barely qualifies as having a screen at all, every cell I've owned over the past three years has definetely had an LCD screen. My latest one is actually quite large, capable of showing 10 lines of text.

I'm sure some companies are using the component thing as an excuse, however it is also true that there are actual shortages out there.
