Well, I guess that is the overall trend.
Traditional stand-alone Networks are being integrated into one seamless ubiquitous world-wide network.
And convergence of media (voice, data, video, etc.) is also changing the functional specs of the public network.
These macro trends mean that a smart vendor who understands the WHOLE networking picture and who has the BREATH of technology to seamlessly integrate different elements of network will have a big advantage of single trick ponies.
NT always had problem unseating the incumbents like ERICY, NOK & MOT in Europe. All of a sudden with their leadership position in optics, & application aware network elements, they are in a good position to offer a compelling package of features/functionality that no one else can match in the Wireless arena.
Companies like MOT, ERICY, NOK are not as strong in the core/edge of the network as NT. And CSCO doesn't understand core or wireless.
So for the next foreseeable future, Roth knows that NT can and should be very agressive in going after the integrated network market share. Size and market share then brings other advantages (witness CSCO in the router market) to maintain NT's position.
NT is only NOW starting to scale and leverage it's in-house & acquired technology so the best is yet to come. The disruptive technology that Internet, Wireless, Optics are bringing to the networking world are creating a huge opportunity for a smart vendor like NT to create a sudden market share shift that otherwise would not have been possible.
I believe this is why Roth is being so aggressive right now in positioning NT to be the dominant networking company. Becuase the time is NOW and this may be once in a decade opportunity to leapfrog over other competitors and solidify NT's position for the forseeable future. |
