Alcatel Completes Construction for Level 3's European Ring 1 Network in France and Germany

BusinessWire, 09/8/2000 05:16

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 2000--Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) today announced that it has completed Ring 1 network construction for Level 3 in France and Germany.

The 1400 km French and German portions of the Level 3 network connect Calais, Lille, Amiens, Paris, Nancy, Strasbourg, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf, among other cities. Alcatel was selected by Level 3 for the deployment of infrastructure and optical fibre cable in the French and German portions of Ring 1 of its European network as well as the cross-channel submarine link between Belgium and the UK.

The French and German portions of the Level 3 network are part of the approximately 3,000 kilometer Ring 1, which connects London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Brussels.

"The Level 3 network will play a major part in enabling the development of the new Internet economy in Europe," said Colin Williams, executive vice president of Level 3 Communications. "We expect to be able to drive down communications costs substantially, which in turn will continue to drive both demand for communications services and new applications whose successful development depends on removing the cost constraint of transporting information."

"Alcatel is very pleased to have built this portion of Level 3's pan-European IP network. We have deployed in a record time of only 16 months, a network relying on the most advanced technologies that will enable the development of the Internet in Europe," said Serge Tchuruk, Chairman and CEO of Alcatel.

The services provided by Alcatel range from network design and engineering, rights of way, project and civil works management, optical fiber cable deployment to transmission equipment.
