"600-650 MILLION CELL PHONES IN 2001?"

Article from yesterdays "Semiconductor Business News" here:

semibiznews.com

Excerpt:

National Semiconductor executives said wireless chip customers were continuing to forecast 420-to-430 million cellular phone shipments in 2000, and preliminary forecasts from handset makers now show the number of phones could increase by 40-50% in 2001. Last year, 270 million cell phones were produced worldwide.

Comments:

* The ratio of handsets sold to net subscriber adds is increasing, even while the rate of subscriber growth is slowing.

* GPRS has launched commercial.

* 1xRTT about to launch commercial.

* WAP has migrated from CDMA to GSM, and we have WAP like interfaces for CDPD used with TDMA.

* GPRS and 1xRTT emphasize DATA capabilities on a voice mobile.

* Subscribers will churn for new DATA services (other reasons to).

* Subscribers will replace handsets for new DATA services (other reasons to).

* Rumors are Mike Buckley MAY purchase a mobile for DATA services

Note: Above numbers do not include wireless enabled handhelds, wireless modems, etc, or a Mike Buckley purchase, and NO EDGE.
