United Microelectronics posted record high revenue in August
Taipei, Sept. 7, 2000 (CENS)--United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), the second largest domestic provider of wafer foundry services listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, reaped revenue of NT$9.831 billion last month, the highest monthly figure ever on record.

UMC's revenue last month jumped tremendously, by 290.30% from the same month last year. For the January-August period, the company registered cumulative revenue of NT$62.911 billion, a whopping hike of 240.44% from the same eight months in 1999.

UMC posted revenue of NT$43.75 billion for the first half of this year, fulfilling 49.72% of the NT$88 billion projected for this year. Meanwhile, the half-year pretax profit of NT$19.51 billion attained 64.97% of the goal of NT$30.03 billion for this year.

The company's gross profit rate for wafer foundry services recorded 44%-46% in the first quarter and 48% in the second quarter of this year. Based on the January-August business operational performance and an expected gross profit rate of over 50% in the second half of this year, UMC is likely to reach NT$110 billion in revenue and NT$45 billion in pretax profit this year. Institutional stock investors estimate UMC's net earnings per share this year to be NT$3-NT$4, much higher than the target of NT$2.67. However, the company has so far indicated no intention of raising its 2000 financial forecast.

UMC's 8-inch wafer foundry capacity stands at 2.6 million wafers, 4% of the global total. The company will increase its foundry capacity to 3.1 million wafers for a global share of 5% next year.
