Frank's info plus HDSL modems. This is very much used where leased lines are of good quality and easily available.

Here in Czech Republic is microwave all the way. Too expensive copper lines, not easily available and expensive. So we build MW links like hell.

Coming UMTS and more bandwidth required in between base stations and the base stations controllers eventually fiber will be required, now the bandwidth requirement to those interlinks you mentioned it is not that big.
