As someone else who is losing money on NOK, I sympathise. As someone who
regularly attends 3GPP and MWIF standards meetings and sees just how un-involved
Nokia is, and as someone who just wrote
about a dozen mobile IP related IPRs that are at
least 6 months ahead of Nokia's latest white-paper (4/9/00, reviews options for MIP
when other firms have already decided and started patenting developments in one field),
I can tell that
inside the technical community Nokia are viewed
as having lost the plot because they have focussed too heavily on handsets. Handsets
are a commodity nowadays, and will become more so now a level playing field is being
created by UMTS; NOK had a time advantage on competitors in GSM handset
technology, with lot so fotlhers playing catchup. But believe me those others have
learned that lesson - they know that early entry equals market share in mobile and they
are determined not to be left behind this time. Just look at how many vendors are
building handsets for CDMA - 41, compared to about 8-10 for GSM. My reaction to
that is they are going to have to compete on price next time around, because features
are going to be pretty much alike, and brand name or no brand name that means tighter
margins, lower profits, and probably a lot lower market share, given the fickle nature of
handset choice.
