John, Re: You run a company that is making lots of a particular product. There is strong demand for that product in the $700 to $800 range, much smaller demand in the $1K+ area. What are you going to do, sell them at $1K and keep the excess in inventory?

Now that's funny: This is exactly what AMD did with the 1 GHz Thunderbirds last month. But at that time you said something like that this was madness. Interesting how quickly you can change your mind... Intel always introduced new processors in the $600-800 range. Only the low yields of the >933 MHz P3s had them to raise prices to unreasonable levels (i.e. $1,000). And keeping the initially high costs of P4 systems (Rambus, power supply, case, cooling etc.) in mind this pricing is very reasonable if they actually want to sell some.
