"We all need to keep a weather eye out for what the other guys are up to, and never ipso facto assume that past performance guarantees future results."

A.L.- sound reasoning

"We do know that our guys still need the GSM IPR to do a multi-mode chip. When SpinCo is ready to spin, the revised S-1 and accompanying roadshow should be really interesting."

Just as there is scads of research ongoing using Q IP to divine CDMA by companies without a formal Q agreement, I feel certain that the absence of a formal GSM IPR agreement (if it hasn't already occurred - and I suspect it may have) wouldn't restrain SpinCo from mastering the GSM architecture and software they require.

I feel it imperative to remember, for an accurate perspective, that GSM is a "known quantity" that is applied successfully by dozens of chipset and appliance manufacturers. CDMA, fundamental to all 3 proposed modes of ITU IMT 2000, remains the Rubik's Cube of 3G.

"So, it would appear Siemens is definitely planning to be a player, despite their earlier Dallas CDMA chip-making fiasco, where they gave up the IS-95 ghost."

Got to crawl before you walk. Got to master IS-95 before advancing to the 3G flavors.

SpinCo's challenge is to master the GSM Stack before Asia/Europe can master CDMA algorithms. In light of Nokias and Intels and Siemens, I'm thrilled with the equation.
