NTT NEC completes first shipment of major W-CDMA infrastructure system for NTT DoCoMo's commercial service

TOKYO (M2 PRESSWIRE) - NEC Corporation (NEC) (NASDAQ : NIPNY) (FTSE : 6701q.l) today announced that it has completed the first shipment of a major W-CDMA infrastructure system for NTT DoCoMo's commercial service deployment scheduled to begin operating from May 2001.

In April 1999, NEC was chosen by NTT DoCoMo to supply W-CDMA equipment for NTT DoCoMo's commercial mobile network service. NEC is the selected supplier of major network systems such as mobile multimedia switching systems (MMS), base transceiver stations (BTS), radio network controllers (RNC), multimedia processing equipment (MPE) and mobile handsets for the world's first third generation mobile network.

NEC already shipped MMS in May this year but today's announcement marks NEC's first shipment of other major infrastructure systems.

NEC will begin volume production of these infrastructure systems from November this year at NEC's manufacturing affiliates in Japan, NEC Tohoku Ltd., and NEC Saitama, Ltd..

NEC and W-CDMA NEC has been actively involved in promoting the development of W-CDMA technologies. NEC has always been at the forefront of development work, and is particularly involved in pursuing technical verification for radio interface and participating in the International standardization activities.

In March 1998, NEC established Telecom MODUS and, in July the same year, established NEC Mobile Communications Development Singapore for the development of third generation mobile systems. In addition, NEC formed a strategic alliance with Siemens AG for next generation mobile telecommunications - to combine their technological strengths and know-how in this field. This culminated, last year, in the two companies forming a joint venture company called "Mobisphere".

NEC has been actively involved in W-CDMA technical trials all over the world with leading carriers in the region such as British Telecom, Telephone Organization of Thailand (TOT), SK Telecom (Korea), SingTel Mobile (Singapore) , Telecom Italia Mobile and Research Institute of Telecommunications Transmission (China). Some of these trials have been conducted jointly with NTT DoCoMo.

The global development bases, vast experience and expertise in the mobile communications field of NEC, will result in the timely introduction of W-CDMA systems that offer sophisticated features delivering performance and reliability in a cost-effective manner and allow NEC to become a major world supplier of next-generation mobile communications systems.
