Just one handset would probably make little difference, but lots of planes, each with hundreds of people over a city might bring a network to its knees. John, there is about a x100 signal reduction (20dB) due to the plane's structure and the person's body loss. And due to the highly directional antennas (in the vertical plane) at the base station, it is unlikely that a direct signal path would exist. At best it would be a combination of one or more reflections. So we are talking an additional x10 loss. (for a total of x1000 signal reduction, compared to the signal environment on the ground). Bottom line, even if the mobile were screaming the actual receive levels at the base station(s) are likely to be low. CDMA networks protect themselves from rogue mobiles who scream (out of the boundaries governed by the power control algorithm) by shutting them up once and for all. The subscriber must then have the mobile repaired or replaced. GSM networks have a way of approximating the distance to the accessing mobile. The default is typically 35 km (for extended GSM cells 70 km). A parameter can prevent mobiles as close as 1 km of acccessing a particular cell. Still this would not prevent a subscriber to try multiple access attempts but it is unlikely that this would cause a major disruption. TDMA networks...who cares? rf_hombre
