That's why I was impressed by the story about the local police chief who decided to take mental health professionals out on calls like that. Police are called on to exercise judgment and discretion in such situations, but they don't have the training or the experience. With maturity comes wisdom, my guess is that the cops doing the shooting are on the young side, or maybe not that smart, but either training them to deal with crazies or sending out someone who is trained would prevent such tragedies. I agree that killing an insane person just because the cops are scared is a tragedy.
