SpinCo's challenge is to master the GSM Stack before Asia/Europe can master CDMA algorithms. In light of Nokias and Intels and Siemens, I'm thrilled with the equation.

Seems like a reasonable way to handicap the race so far. It will be telling if in a few months we see some of the same types of reports out of Japan on the early WCDMA chips as we are seeing crop up now with GPRS in Europe.

And I agree with you that if Q/SpinCo can develop a commercially functional WCDMA handset chipset, and others are still struggling, the IPR pieces should fall rather neatly in place, and it will be game, set and match.

Q has been understandably non-specific to date on said chipset design status and development timetable, so it will be most interesting to see what nuggets, if any, come out of the final S-1 and roadshow.
