Yes, I was thinking that also. I re-read James Grant's article from the 3/31/2000 Grant's Interest Rate Observer. The discussion of hedonic effects on productivity seems carefully researched. I can't imagine why Prof. Gordon and Prof. Medoff would destroy their careers by neglecting something quite elementary, as Mr. Epstein implies. Such suicide has happened (remember "cold fusion"?), but it's rare. Harvard professors tend to be pretty astute.
