So, from what I can gather so far, CDMA cellphones in aircraft are not a problem. In a 747, line of sight requirement means there would be very few basestations which would connect through a window with any particular cellphone in the aircraft. The base stations under the aircraft, or in a radius out to some angle, wouldn't get more than a trivial background noise signal from a handset in the aircraft resulting from some reflections. So Globalstar and CDMA handsets should be allowed to be used at will in aircraft. If out of a licensed area, a CDMA handset would try to connect, fail, so the user would give up and stop polluting the spectrum, probably with no significant damage to people using that spectrum, though I suppose if there are analogue users in that spectrum they'd get some harassment as the person tried logging on. Give it another year or three and there won't be many places were analogue signals will be operating in frequencies where WWeb users want to be because the spectrum will be so valuable that they'll convert to WWeb applications and HOPE for some stray user to come into their web. The FCC and FAA [being big dumb monopolistic ripoff government departments] will be a drag on society while they try to catch up with the modern 21st century world of It. Anecdotal stories about some alleged incident where a laptop computer annoyed a pilot [without any confirmation] are not a reason to stop billions of $$ of value being created in thin air by people using their WWeb devices. Aircraft will just have to use other frequencies [or the same ones in CDMA mode]. Mqurice
