What if I, as a shareholder of Citibank, for instance, don't want the company to donate to a Repblican senator's re-election campaign? Do I have a say in how Citibank spends its campaign money? No. It's assumed the money will be used to ultimately increase shareholder value. Same with union dues. The money will be used to ultimately increase "workholder" value.

Why should the government (or the courts, actually) try to rein in a union member's contribution as opposed to a shareholder's contribution?

You're right about shortage of skilled employees improving benefits more than unions.

Re: the last point: We've got bigger fish to fry than worrying about union dues check-off. Let's start worrying more about companies that are making unsafe products. It seems as if our priorities are misguided at times.
