I don't think that ownership of a security and membership in a union are the same thing. Ownership of a security does not require one to pay periodic dues. What if a corporation, as a condition of employment forced their employees to contribute to a fund. Lets say that fund was used solely for political contributions to conservative candidates? I think you would find this appalling.
