Is the dog going to be used for hunting? Pointers are usually better all around field and water dogs while labs shine in water. Labs also seem to be able to handle cold water better with out getting chilled due to the thicker coat. I've had both and would say that pointers, at least german shorthairs, are smarter. Either would be a good pick for the kids.
