hey jxm
the HBO ko nation format, as Quahog noted, was flat effing horrible. the ring announcer made you realize just how delightful a good announcer can be, not unlike great refs, whose greatness is evidenced by their lack of being on camera. they're rarely in the picture! but this announcer seemed almost to have no particular boxing knowledge, and certainly no flair for the dramatic. he sounded more like the guy who hands out merit awards at the company picnic. freaking pathetic.
yeah, ko nation and the whole rap crap is a 100% turn off. but i have the cure. it's just like what i do each year with the super bowl. i tune in 5 minutes (max!) before kick-off.
getting back to referees for a second.... how about that frank cappucino? is he the best, or what? he did the mckart vs. winky whateverhisnameis fight. i bet he only touched the fighters three times in the whole 12 rounds, yet he broke them maybe 20-30 times, easy. all by voice... "c'mon guys, BREAK!", or "get outta' there, get outta' there". he'd give verbal reprimands and carry on dialog with the fighters, at one point saying to them, "c'mon, you guys look like you're fighting with your heads instead of your fists!"... but he stayed the heck out of the way. what command! what savvy! a great ref. he's now my favorite ref, since mills lane has retired.
