<<I tend to look at this Handheld Game as a sector of the 2.5G wireless voice and data tornado that I'm trying to get a fix on.>>

There is going to be a tornado around wireless and handheld communications that we need to get a fix on. Some ramblings:

- I've got two kids - 14 and 11. Both are heavy into AOL for the IM and buddy list features. They both chat with friends and their Grandmother (66) and Great Grandmother (91) who live several states away. It is the communications tool of choice for their age group.

- My son and all his friends have PALMs. They mostly trade (beam) and play games but also take notes, record reminders, etc. I was out of town this week and wanted to tell my son good luck before his first football game of the season. I would have paid a king's ransom to be able to send an IM or e-mail message to his PDA.

- Cellphones are becoming commonplace with teens - particularly with new pricing plans which provide 2 for 1 phone deals and share minutes within a family. Nokia 51xx with colorful skins has the edge here. Cellphones are treated as a safety and anytime/anywhere teenage location device. Add GPS tracking (phone location plotted on a map accessible via PC browser) and you have the making of a serious killer application. Add a telematics component to this capability (track car location and speed) and you have a Wingcast killer app.

- My wife is the team mom for a baseball and a soccer team. Parents are using their cellphone as the primary contact medium of choice because they always have it with them. She has their cellphone numbers programmed into her cellphone for easy contact.

- Total count for our family of four - three cellphones, two PALMs, three PCs, and one cable modem.

We may not be typical but we may be a harbinger of things to come. Estimates for US wireless/PDA penetration and upgrades do not fully reflect this trend toward communications ubiquity. That which was once a luxury is fast becoming a necessity.
