I didn't realize CHris regretted his choices. I think we all probably do to some extent, as you said. Dan has always wished he had tried harder to get to the majors in baseball--but he "did the right, the expected, thing"
I'm so glad you said that about flexibility- because that's kinda what I ended up saying- that it wasn't the end of things if he suddenly found out he'd screwed up. I think that's what they think and feel- that this is IT. This is THEIR LIFE DECISION and once they make it- all the other doors slam shut- and lock.
Since Ammo is trying to make the same decision about theatre, I have some sympathy for his parents. I compared it to major league sports-- hard to make it to the top tier. And a huge gap between that and the high school drama teacher.
They know this. But they still dream.
I know you understand when I say how clear their eyes are, and how OPEN they are. It hurts to look at them!
We went yesterday to the speech competition Ammo was in- we missed him, but watched some of the other categories. It was remarkable, and awesome, and thrilling. They do these ten minute monologues, perfect, controlled, poised, mature.
Then they go out in the hall, and are giggling and screaming and saying "I was like-- soooo bad!" and collapse on the floor. |
