PCCW buys into Taiwanese firm

PACIFIC Century CyberWorks (0008) has taken an 8.9 per cent stake in Taiwanese-based Era Communications for US$50 million (HK$390 million) to manufacture content for its Network of the World (NOW) service.

PCCW has also announced it will invest HK$200 million in a Web production centre initially to make 800 hours a year of content, eventually increasing to 2000 hours a year.

The company's investment in Era follows Friday's announcement that Gigamedia, one of Taiwan's largest Internet service providers, has scrapped a plan to form a venture with PCCW.

NOW was rolled out in June from its London studio and claims to be the world's first truly converged television-web service, combining the experience of watching television and surfing the Internet.

Initially available in English, NOW is scheduled to offer original content services in Japanese and Chinese.

A NOW studio is scheduled to be completed in Tokyo next year, with NOW Chinese content to be distributed from Taiwan and Hong Kong in 2001.
