WI Carr's King Sees 2000 Computer Demand Falling: Comment

Taipei, Sept. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Henry King, an analyst at W.I. Carr Securities Ltd., comments on demand for personal computers.

``People overestimated the demand for PCs in the first quarter. For instance, flash memory two-megabit prices rose from $1.2 per unit in January to $2.8 in July and then fell to $1.8 at the beginning of September. Flash memory demand hasn't been as good as people expected because computer demand hasn't been good.

``I think 1999 was a super-normal year for computer demand. That's because a lot of people upgraded their systems to cope with Y2K. People don't necessarily have to upgrade this year and demand for PCs isn't as strong.

``Emerging technology, whether it be faster CPUs (central processing units) or new software, hasn't really come out this year.''

Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. ``have postponed their product launches and end-user have postponed their purchases'' of computers.
