Ray, I don't think that Don has over-dramitized the EV1 situation. GM clearly has been making the EV1 as invisible as possible to those who would be buyers.
It is a little unfair to compare the 5K battery cost just to the ICE engine's 3K cost. I would guess that an EV's total drive system would be about 8K. That should compare favorably to the ICE's motor, transmission, all of the pollution control add-ons, ongoing service and maintenance costs, and the hidden costs of the ICE's pollution on the environment and our health.
In any event, I think this action will hasten the development of our rechargeable fuel cell, which should solve the range issue. If it works, and I don't see any fundamental reason why it won't,I think that we will have the choice power system for most vehicles.
Today's delayed reaction was surely interesting. I went out to get some lunch about 2 hours before closing, and it was virtually unchanged, with 32K shares traded. AT the close, 310K shares were traded, up 1 1/4.
