I agree with you that Palm innovation stagnated horribly in COMS's hand, and we have yet to see if PALM will do better. I expect to see more innovation from Apple (per persistent rumors), Sony, and Handspring than from PALM, but I would love to be proven wrong. I have never seen, and don't expect to see, any technical innovation at Microsoft.
As far as audio goes, I actually turn off all system sounds on my Palm, and on my desktop computer, because on a handheld device audio is battery-intensive, and on either system it is annoying to other people.
By the way, the Palm displays are not monochrome; they are grayscale. Because they don't have RGB pixel trios, they are much crisper than color displays (although admittedly the displays on the $149 devices are lousy).
I understand your point about 8MB being insufficient, and from a PC user's point of view, you are correct. But in reality, none of the apps I want to run on a handheld require more than about 30KB of memory. This is unfathomable in the Windows world, be it Win32 or WinCE.
