Sony to Use Transmeta Chips in PictureBook Laptops

Sony Corp. said it will use chips from Transmeta Corp. in its new line of PictureBook laptops that will have double the battery life of previous models. Sony Electronics Inc., the San Diego-based unit of the Japanese concern, said that the Crusoe chip from Transmeta will increase the battery capacity in those machines to a range of 2.5 to 5.5 hours from about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Previous models of the PictureBook, which were introduced in the U.S. in 1998, used chips from Intel Corp., Santa Clara, Calif. In May, Transmeta, a closely watched start-up also based in Santa Clara, said it would supply microprocessors and operating software for Gateway Inc.'s forthcoming Web appliances. Sony said that the new PictureBook will use Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Millennium operating system and support digital video editing, word-processing and other applications. It said it expects to begin shipping the new computers next month.
