Some of the news releases regarding the AT&T/Nextel chatter speculate on a AT&T buyout of Nextel. Ain't going to happen. A merger or association of some sort MAYBE, but not a buyout. If they're objective is to increase share price of T or AWE, buying Nextel won't accomplish that goal. Since when has an acquiring telecom paying a premium (and they would pay a premium) boosted its share price?

There's a whole bunch of speculation by the media, who for the most part don't have a clue. Two of the news releases didn't even spell their name right, and one claimed AT&T was interested in Nextel (not Nextell or NexTel) for their existing 3G (still looking for the meaning of what "is" is JF)system. Uh?

Who writes this stuff, and why can't they come up with more creative or believable speculation?

I thought it was interesting this ATT/Nextel gossip was released within hours of the FCC announcing the December rescheduling date of the C and F block spectrum auction. Maybe a bidding partner? They need to be announced soon. And not a mention of the other McCaw properties and how this could all be tied together. What about the upcoming ICO-Teledesic IPO?

There's nothing wrong with good old fashion speculation, but I suppose that would require journalists to actually know something about the companies they write about.
