China to Adopt Qualcomm Mobile Phone Standard, FT Says

--From AOL. I realize this has already been posted, but it just appeared on AOL and has a Bloomberg credit.-- Cooters

Beijing, Sept. 12 (Bloomberg) -- The Chinese government has renewed its commitment to adopting a U.S. mobile phone standard developed by Qualcomm Inc., the Financial Times reported.

China must introduce and adopt narrowband CDMA IS 95, the report quoted Wu Jichuan, the minister of information industry, as saying.

China Unicom Ltd. senior executives in June said that the company had no intention of rolling out a narrowband CDMA network. Share prices of Qualcomm Inc., which developed the CDMA standard, fell following the news.

Billions of dollars are at stake in China's cell phone market, the world's second largest. The government has begun developing its own so-called TD-SCDMA standard as it seeks to reduce dependence on foreign firms.
