Ah, the old 'shorts should be seen and not heard' theory along with the old 'I short stocks too, but never share my opinion in public'.

I wonder why no one ever seems to make the same arguments about being long and stating their opinions?

Your bold, all inclusive statement that someone who states an an opinion while simultaneously holding a position is trying to 'manipulate' price action is incorrect. Some of us recognize that the market is bigger than anyone, and a lot of folks recognize that these threads are not the center of the investing universe. Gosh, wouldn't it be great if all we had to do to make money was to take a position and type out a few posts on the Internet? Ridiculous.

BTW, wrt your Geist article, the poor man was heavily long Solv Ex back in 1996-7. While there are still some who blame the short sellers for 'destroying' the company, they are just individuals who are full of sour grapes and can't accept that they were wrong, as subsequent events proved. It was the company's directors who were sanctioned by the SEC. It was the company which lost it's meritless lawsuit against 'the shorts'. Geist's article is a prime example of not being able to take responsibility for your own trades and for trying to place the blame where it doesn't belong.

Short selling is part of the market. Learn to deal with it.

Barb
