The Cheney appointment wasn't particularly inspiring, but Bush could have done a lot worse, i.e., by picking that right-wing governor of Oklahoma who was touted as the No. 1 choice for a while. A solid Midwesterner as the veep choice would have made a lot more sense: Ashcroft of Missouri, governor of Michigan, McConnell of Kentucky. GWB was "coronated" early by the GOP power base to avoid someone like McCain from grabbing the nomination, then moving the party in a different direction. Re the NE: I honestly don't think the GOP ever had any hope of winning more than Maine and NH in the NE. Their strategy was/is to win the South, West, most of the Midwest, and either California or Florida. Still may prove a winning strategy. Yes, I agree that Bush has a short fuse, but I don't think Oprah is going to say anything to ignite it. She's after ratings, and a large chunk of her audience votes Republican. Yes, it'll probably be a tie. |
