PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 20, 1997--Legato Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:LGTO), a leader in the enterprise storage management software market, today announced the results of a recent database backup and restore demonstration for very large database (VLDB) environments.
The backup of a Microsoft SQL Server database is the first demonstration of high performance backup of a large database in a Windows NT environment on an Intel-based architecture. The benchmarks demonstrate that backup solutions are now available to meet the data protection requirements of large enterprise-class, mission-critical applications deployed on Windows NT and SQL Server environments.
Working together, Legato, Amdahl and Ampex have demonstrated a backup of a Microsoft SQL Server database of greater than 180 gigabytes per hour sustained transfer rate, with less than 5% CPU utilization. Conducted jointly by Legato, Ampex and Amdahl at Ampex's Redwood City facility, the tests measured the maximum transfer rate achieved in backing up a Microsoft SQL Server database running under Windows NT.
This was accomplished using Legato's NetWorker BusinesSuite Module for Microsoft SQL Server and NetWorker Power Edition for Windows NT running on an Amdahl EnVista Server Model FS, with 4 Intel Pentium Pro 200 MHz processors, 1GB RAM, a 350GB Amdahl LVS 4500 Storage Subsystem, and Ampex DSTr 810 automated cartridge library (utilizing 4 Ampex DST tape drives).
As business-critical database applications grow to hundreds of gigabytes and beyond, high performance backup and restore operation has now become an essential requirement for VLDB implementation. Based on Legato's recently announced BusinesSuite and Power Edition product lines, together with the Amdahl EnVista Server, LVS 4500 Storage Subsystem, and Ampex's DST tape libraries, the recent demonstration positions the three companies as technology leaders and partners in the Windows NT market, providing performance and scaleability for large Windows NT applications.
"The true measurement of a leader in enterprise storage management solutions is not just in how many platforms and applications are covered, but how those solutions perform in a mission-critical environment," said Nora Denzel, senior vice president of Legato Systems Inc. "These benchmarks demonstrate that Legato is the performance leader in the enterprise storage management market. We have the technology and expertise to deliver high-performance solutions in both the Windows NT and UNIX markets."
"With over one million Windows NT 4.0 licenses shipped, Microsoft has demonstrated that Windows NT is the fastest growing operating platform in the world," said Charles Foley, vice president of marketing for Amdahl Corporation's Server Business Group. "Our EnVista Servers, running our A+ NetWorker Storage Management Software, are poised to satisfy a large share of that growth. Amdahl, Legato and Ampex have proven that the hardware and software exists today to support and protect large, mission-critical Windows NT applications."
"Ampex has proven that high performance tape support for Windows NT is a reality," said Michael Wilke, Ampex senior director of marketing. "Our benchmarks, using Legato's NetWorker Power Edition running on Amdahl EnVista servers, demonstrate that large databases running on Windows NT can be protected with the same level of performance that is common to UNIX environments."
BusinesSuite is a dedicated set of NetWorker options that provide on-line data protection of databases and other enterprise-critical applications that must be available to users on a 24-hour basis. NetWorker, in concert with BusinesSuite, is the only comprehensive storage management solution that addresses the need for cross-platform support of enterprise applications running on Windows NT, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, and Legato OEM platforms, including DIGITAL UNIX and Alpha NT. BusinesSuite offers support for Oracle, Informix, SAP, Microsoft SQL Server and Exchange applications, with many more in development.
Power Edition is a specialized adaptation of Legato's NetWorker technology that dramatically improves backup/restore performance on a local data server, relative to the standard NetWorker product, which is optimized for network-wide performance involving potentially hundreds of clients across multiple types of platforms. With Power Edition, Legato combines its enterprise-strength NetWorker technology and storage management expertise to deliver high performance solutions that can be optimized for each hardware platform and customer application.
Pricing and Availability
Legato's BusinesSuite Module for SQL Server is currently available, and priced at $1,000 (U.S. list), and NetWorker Power Edition for Windows NT will be available in Q3 97, priced at $5,000 (U.S. list).
