I don't see anything that suggests SKT is going to wait until 2003 to deploy 3G services. All the article is saying is that SKT is willing to deploy CDMA2000 right now and delay the launch of any "potential" WCDMA services until 2003, by which time Korean equipment companies may have WCDMA equipment.

The real key is that CDMA2000 has concluded the standardization process and has the equipment to back it up right now. WCDMA has not concluded the standardization process and has no equipment to back it up.

Korea is in the same position as DDI and Sprint PCS. They have a natural evolution from cdmaOne to CDMA2000. They will save billions by staying with the existing infrastructure which is pin compatible with the new 3G hardware. They have no incentive to go with WCDMA except for the asinine thought that global roaming on the WCDMA standard is the key to making money for DOMESTIC 3G services.

By the time that WCDMA is standardized and deployed in Euro-land, CDMA2000 and WCDMA will be the 2 principle forms of wireless service. By this time, dual mode phones will be made available for the international travellers.

Let's try not to bash SKT or CHU based on the total misrepresentation of facts in the press. Let the press be the only source of negative stereotypes.
