I've read almost the entire Bible, and more than once. I would not call it brief, or terse. Job, for example, which I happen to like from a poetic standpoint, is very long winded. (although it's a deplorable story, in my humanistic framework- God was awful to that poor man, and just because God gave him NEW wives and kiddies and animals doesn't make the whole thing any better for the wives and kiddies and animals that got killed to make God's stupid mean little point) is very long winded.

Most of the Bible is exactly like any other old religious text- long on great deeds, and boasting, and killing, and raping and looting, and wandering around and conquering. All old religious texts are long on that sort of macho crap because that's what folks DID, and women didn't get to write the religious texts. We'd have very different religions if women had gotten to write the texts- and I guarantee you no God thought up by a woman would go around killing babies.
