Alcatel to Demonstrate INsight Platform using NearMe Wireless Application at m-Commerce 2000

BusinessWire, 09/13/2000 08:23

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 13, 2000--

MapInfo Spin-off NearMe Delivers Powerful Location-based

Services via Alcatel's INsight Platform

NearMe, Inc., in cooperation with MapInfo Corporation (NASDAQ:MAPS), today announced that Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) is demonstrating NearMe's Enhanced Wireless Directory Services application using Alcatel's INsight Platform at m-Commerce 2000. The NearMe demonstration showcases NearMe's Intellocate Remote API that allows full integration of location-based services and content, such as restaurant guides, concerts and events, and driving directions, into any wireless application. The demonstration by Alcatel also includes location-based advertising.

NearMe's Enhanced Directory application leverages Alcatel's profiling and location detection technology, enabling wireless carriers to deliver dynamic content and service promotions to people on the move. With "location" at the core of NearMe's directory services, the application also represents powerful integration with MapInfo's industry-leading, location-based technology. It is this same location technology from MapInfo that is integrated within Alcatel's INsight Platform.

"We are excited to be selected by Alcatel as one of the key industry providers for wireless carriers and to deliver the first location-based application for the INsight Platform," said John Haller, founder and president, NearMe, Inc. "NearMe is committed to working with Alcatel to extend the range of high-quality products and services wireless providers can offer their customers, and to meet increased market demand for mobile Internet location services."

INsight is based on Alcatel's market-proven "Telecom Platform," a highly robust and scalable platform deployed with customers worldwide. INsight enables service providers to extend their business on the Internet to the new world of wireless Internet devices.

Pardeep Kohli, senior director, New Ventures, for Alcatel's Network Applications Division, said, "The m-Commerce 2000 summit allows us with our partners to show wireless providers what the `wireless Internet' offers. Alcatel's INsight Platform increases a wireless service provider's return on new and existing investment by tapping the reservoir of information in their voice and data systems and utilizing it to enable new value-added services. NearMe's value-added consumer directory complements Alcatel's wireless infrastructure in delivering an end-to-end solution for location-based services."
