Avici Strengthens Management Team With Telecommunications Industry Veterans
N. BILLERICA, Mass., Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Avici Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: AVCI - news) today announced the appointment of Steve Kaufman to the position of chief operating officer and director. Avici also formally announced the appointments of James Graham as vice president of worldwide customer service and support and of Catherine Hapka and James Mongiello to its Board of Directors. The appointments strengthen the operational management structure for the newly public company as it continues to win market acceptance of its Terabit Switch Router (TSR®) in carrier networks worldwide.

Kaufman joins Avici as its chief operating officer and as a member of the company's Board of Directors. Joining him on the Board are Hapka, chairman, CEO and founder of Rhythms NetConnections Inc., (Nasdaq: RTHM - news), an international provider of broadband communication services, and Mongiello, a venture partner with Redpoint Ventures.

Prior to joining Avici, Kaufman was president of Lucent's multiservice core networks division, responsible for the ATM and frame relay core switching, IP core routing, ATM access and the TDM cross connect product lines. Previously, he was vice president and general manager of core switching and vice president of product management for Lucent's carrier networks division. Kaufman was also a general manager in Lucent's microelectronics division. Prior to Lucent, he worked at Intel Corporation where he held a variety of marketing management roles on the Pentium processor family of products.

Graham joins Avici to spearhead its worldwide customer service and support organization. Previously, he was vice president of Amdahl Corporation's worldwide product support services organization. Graham has more than 30 years of experience in the telecommunications industry and has held key executive and management positions at Amdahl and Control Data Corporation.
