Stockrider, don't you just love these articles on things like "zero emission cars"? They represent dim-witted thinking at it's best.

The electric cars they are talking about are anything but "zero emission". They are in fact extremely inefficient. They require electricity to be generated which is pretty efficient, to be transmitted with loses dependent upon distance travelled - which is not so great, batteries to be charged which is very inefficient, and then finally the electrons to be used by the motor on the car.

Far from zero emissions - what they do is remove the emissions from the point of use, and result in more emissions elsewhere. For those who believe in global warming and the greenhouse effect - do the math. You'll find out the carbon emitted to the atmosphere is much greater than if gasoline had been burned (assuming coal, fuel oil, or natural gas power generation). And of course there is that pesky problem of the natural gas shortage - vbg.

This is more NIMBY thinking - zero emissions in my back yard (but let's not talk about those increased emissions elsewhere).

Now, let's consider one more important fact. California is in the grips of a massive electrical power shortage fiasco. Do you suppose that would improve much if 5% of the cars were added as drains on the grid? Where would the new plants be built? How would they be fired? Again, do the math and compare the energy used in moving cars around to that used for heating and lighting. You'll find it's a very big figure, and 5% of that big figure will be quite a strain on their already frail grid.

Of course there are solutions. Hydropower, but nobody who's green seems to like that since it kills the little fishies. Nuclear power - in California? Ha Ha Ha. Solar power - not quite here yet. Wind power - not in my back yard.

Ok, enough already. Don't bother me with the facts! There's always hydrogen fuel cells - but wait... those are even more inefficient as they require vast amounts of power to generate the hydrogen. Stop it already - I just want my clean air and quiet beautiful back yard!

Keep it up California, you are doing a great job of heralding in the future.
